Hey I'm your guy on this one, with seven years in the stainless customer service business as the technical specialist.
Depending on the finish, brushed, like an elevator, or smooth, like a mirror, you have a couple of options.
For a brush finish, use Scotchbrite scouring pads, available at most hardware stores. The secret is to use these which are plastic, NEVER use steel wool on stainless steel because the tiny iron particles left behind will start rusting, and then it gets ugly. Too bad it was a cast iron skillet - the scratch needs to be cleaned out with hot vinegar to ensure that the iron has been completely removed.
For the mirror finish, it will be really hard to cure, especially if the scratch is deep. You can't fill it in, and to remove it, you have to grind it down slightly, as in about one half of one thousands of an inch. Worse, there is no guarantee that the spot will disappear after the treatement.
For more information on stainless steel finishes for appliance, check out the Nickel Development Institure website, http://www.nidi.org - they may have something online with instructions.
Good luck,
CrNiFe (chrome, nickel, iron, the components of the best stainless steels!)
