and see who buys. Most consumers don't really seem to research how much things (not just cars) should cost and I think tend to look at full retail of a new car as the base then look at a used price and think it probably seems OK. And if they are buying used they are tolerant of "issues." and the dealers capitalize on that, which is okay, but it's the execution that counts.
There is a good local Saab dealer near me and his CPO cars are decent, and he gives a fair deal, but he is not usually the lowest price. But you can largely trust him. A local indy used Saab specialist (now out of business) charged too much for what you got and didn't clean up a car at all until it was sold. (and even then....).
I got my 9000 from an indy 4 hours away and the car was so pristine (as were all his used cars) that it was almost like buying a new car. As he put it to me, "It's my reputation that goes out with that car. I want the customer to be happy."
Some, maybe most dealers, just don't care. They just want to move the iron at a profit. Can't blame them, even if they don't do business the way many of us would. To them, they are pretty much selling a commodity.
