and get some sort of external storage device to back up your critical data and then wipe that laptop clean. Assume that files on the external device are infected with a virus and treat it as such, particularly if they are files that typically are associated with viruses. Reinstall the laptop clean and before doing much of anything put service pack 2 and McAfee or other A/V software on it. Yes, scanning a laptop is a pain because they harddrives are usually slow, but . . . the alternative also sucks. Reattach the external device and use your A/V software to scan and clean it and then use the files as desired.

Anything other than a clean install at this point will always be suspect. Your problems with uninstalling McAfee could be that you've got SpyWare written to interfere with McAfee - a friend of mine had a problem like that.

I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear, but if it were me, that's what I'd do.
