..would be to write about something unique or fairly off the wall. I'm a senior this year and firmly believe that my college essay got me into the school I attend. I had a similar situation, with several choices or just a general essay. I chose to write about "a topic of local, national or world significance that I feel strongly about." I ended up writing about the water crisis in the US and how in the future water concerns will be more vital and intense than the debate over our dependence on fossil fuels is.
This is just an idea. It was unique and I think that is what makes the difference. Your goal is to stand out among thousands of applicants all writing on similar and potentially overlapping topics. If you can get the person reading your essay to pause and ponder for even a moment about your essay you have increased your chances tremendously.
Sorry for the length.
Best of luck!
