The 9/3 and 8/4 positions actually give you more control than 10 and 2...it just takes a little getting used to for those of us who were originally taught 10 and 2. The advantage is that you're using stronger muscles in the 9/3 or 8/4 method: your biceps and lats, instead of your pecs and triceps.
10 and 2 sets you up for hand-over-hand steering, where with 9/3 and 8/4, you just slide your hands on the wheel to regrip, instead of actually letting go and crossing over. Also, with 8/4, you maximize the distance you can turn the wheel without having to regrip.
The airbag concern seems valid to me, too.
My 9-3 is clearly set up for an 8/4 hand position. There are four spokes, with hand-hold gaps at 8 and 4. The radio controls are also at 8 and 4, so you can control them with your thumbs without moving your hands.
Below is a link to a great discussion of steering techniques.
