I moved here 17 years ago against advice from my mother. "never move to racine!" It's an industrial town, the in town housing and companies/factories often share neighborhoods, which is quite odd. There is a lot of new housing going up in the suburbs. The school system is suffering every year for lack of money but borrows from the next year. Johnson Wax is the large company in town, along with Case, Modine, not sure what others are still here. The downtown is trying to build up it's shopping and culture, and not doing to bad at it. There is a nice art museum, a symphony (small), a shopping mall across town, target, barnes and noble, home depot, k-marts, sears, boston store, restaurants are iffy but a few very good ones..sebastians on the north side, a few nice little ones downtown. the lake is beautiful and keeps the city windy and cool for the mostpart, summers are humid but with a breeze off the lake. Kringle is the big attraction, a nice breakfast pastry that costs a lot more to ship than if you live here. the nice sections of town and the bad parts are scattered, there is a very nice historic district surrounded by bad neighborhoods. most of the schools are by choice, the magnets or charter schools placed usually in schools where no one wants to go. Several charter schools, gifted, for the arts, environment, etc. the city is changing fast and furiously. always trying to become better, i've enjoyed it very much, but i'm a homebody and don't need culture. hope this comes in time for you to choose, if not give it a look see, i think it's worth it, if nothing else it can be a stopping off point to many other wonderful wisconsin cities.
