The mac/pc thing is not as hard as people think. Bottom line is, the PC's will work fine with the airport, but the airport is easier to administer with a Mac. The Mac will work happily with anything. I say go out and get whatever router is cheap and easy to get. The wireless router plugs right into your modem-- no need for a computer to be attached.
There's no reason to put a wireless card in a desktop unless it's just too hard to run cable. Run cable where you can, and when it gets too hard, use wireless. As for 802.11b vs 802.11g-- Your internet connection is probably not as fast as either, so the only time you will notice the extra speed of g (or a cable) is when transferring files from one computer to another. Which is also not a problem these days.
You can relay a signal from one wireless router to another to cover a larger area, but that's a special feature. You will pay a good deal more for it, and you'll have to choose a brand and stivck with it-- I understand they all do it a little differently.
The signals are pretty good. I'm using a connection that's coming through two plaster walls and one brick one right now. Cinder block and steel is a different story- that'll kill it. So it might just cover your whole place. I can get signals from some of my neighbors. There's only one way to find out though.
I've not only got a Mac and an XP machine at work, they both use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse through a KVM switch. They share files happily. We've come a long way.
