It's in the same family as the Buick Rainier and the Chevy TrailBlazer, among others. However, Saab has re-done the interior and suspension tuning, so it will feel more like a Saab on the inside and, they claim, drive more like a Saab. I'd imagine it will still feel like an SUV, but I guess they're aiming for the Saab-car-like side of SUV-dom.
Because it's built on a truck platform, and not a car platform like the X5, it will probably be far behind the BMW, as well as behind the Merc, VW, Porsche, and Volvo. It will also probably be a lot cheaper than those, and it will offer higher towing capacity than (at least) most of those.
To me, if you need an SUV for towing or off-road purposes, I think the 9-7X will be a great choice, and better than the X5 or any of the similar competition. If you don't need it, I'd recommend a car over any of the SUV's anyway. The 9-5 Wagon has far more cargo space than a BMW X5, for example.
Good luck with your decision. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the 9-7X, so if you do drive one, let us know about it.
