Echoing the concern about burning pine/softwoods, I had a chimney fire about about 16 years ago just after moving into a new (to me) house whose chimney hadn't hadn't been swept in maybe 15 years. Turns out the previous dweller had (1) burned most pine logs and (2) hadn't ever had the chimney cleaned; the resultant creosote made for a nearly devastating experience. Luckily, we could close the flue tightly and we starved the fire. (When there's a chimney fire, it sounds not at all unlike a 747 taking off. Really!) The rule is to burn aged hardwoods and to have your chimney professionally swept about every two years if you have a fire or two each week during the 5-6 month "fireplace season." Good luck. DKH
