they can have *vastly* different personalities. Some (like ours) are very friendly and love everyone, while others can be temperamental and even nippy. This is even obvious if you see them as pups before they are weaned. We got ours from a litter of 7, and a couple of his brothers were not nice then and have not improved (one lives a mile away).
As Adam notes, they don't know they are small (or choose to ignore it) and have big dog temperaments. This makes them a lot more fun than the average little dog, and more importantly, they aren't high-strung and hyper. Since they are bred to herd cattle and run around outdoors all day they are also quite sturdy, unlike many little dogs which can be rather fragile. Ours weights 25 pounds and can almost pull your wrist off. FWIW, Corgis also shed like a much bigger dog. They have a double coat and there is a LOT of fur on these little dudes.
They are a "herding breed" and this is a hard-wired instinct--definite control freaks!. Ours herds the kids, our other dog (an English Cocker Spaniel) and will even group all his toys into a pile. They have a LOT of energy and will play fetch until your arms wear out.
Note there are two Corgi breeds and they are NOT closely related. There is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi (no tail) and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi (slightly larger and it has a tail). The Pembroke is the most common and easier to find.
Whatever breed of dog you get, *be sure* to go to a breeder rather than a pet store. Pet stores get their dogs from "puppy mills" that have zero control on the breeding. You get generally inferior dogs from a pet store, and will pay for it as the dog ages. There is no significant price difference between a quality dog from a breeder and a dog from a pet shop. Just tell the breeder you want a "family dog" and they will work with you.
Sorry this is long--hope it helps.
Noel
