He's got solid info and as an AKC judge he sees them all. I was going to post a similar note but he covered it all.
Do find an AKC (Amercan Kennel Club) show to visit to after reading the "Right Dog for You" book. It is very important to find a breed that will fit your lifestyle and household. There are many dogs that wind up in a pound or shelter because the previous owners got the wrong dog for them. There are good books at your local library, too.
Just remember, unless your kids are unusually responsible, your and your spouse will be taking care of the pooch. Kids want to cuddle the dog and play with it, not take it for walks (after the first 2-4 weeks), feed it, clean up its poops, etc. This is a factor you have to keep in mind. We have two dogs and two kids, and my wife and I do 90% of the care and feeding. The kids are the dogs' entertainment systems.
Finding the right dog is fun, and having them is wonderful One of mine is lying next to me in my office right now. They're great critters!
