I've shipped my dogs from LA to Pittsburgh a few times as checked in luggage. My vet did not recommend sedating the dogs. I've had no problems with shipping my dogs in the luggage area. Although since you have cat, I imagine it's small enough to put under a seat. The night before, I would not feed your cat too much, since it will be traveling for about 10 hours. The day of traveling, I would give it a something small to eat, and water. Good luck.
