it should be fine, even for a longish trip. I have a very well mannered Siamese (contradiction in terms, I know) that flies in a soft-sided Sherpa bag under the seat in front of me. The Sherpa was designed by a flight attendant who started her own company selling these (I think).
As a kitten my little one travelled in the car well, in or out of the carrier and I just learned to make sure he had no food/water 8-10 hours prior (cept from the shower I never could break him of that)
When my parents were alive I regularly flew with him at least twice a year and only had one accident (went #1 in the carrier) on a flight in the past 10 years. I took him to the lav, removed the liner (an old t-shirt) which I put in a plastic grocery bag I keep tucked in one of the zip pockets, tied that up & gave it to the flight attendant to dispose, took off my t-shirt, and replaced that as the liner. I remember I had forgotten to take his water away the nite b4 that too, so it was all my fault.
Ive never sedated and people are EXTRA nice to you when you are travelling with a non-screaming pet/child in the carrier in both the airport and on the plane. I never get so many smiles as when the cat is with me *lol*
There are small disposable litter boxes made of recycled materials you can put in your small carry-on luggage easily, and litter fits in a large zip-loc bag if you need a half poud or small amount for the first trip to the new place. I immediately set up the litter box in a new place or hotel room, and empty the cat out in front of it. If I get a rental car, I put the litter box on the floor in the back seat, and let the animal out as soon as I am clear of the airport garage *lol* My parents lived 2-3 hours from the nearest airport and I found that to be easiest.
If you do have a few weeks b4 you travel I recommend you start taking the cat either free, or in the carrier it is going to travel in, in the car for 1/2 hour round trips every other day, and give the animal a treat when you get home like some luncheon meat or something it already likes. This de-stresses the animal to the worst part of the experience- the initial half hour.
The cost is usually around 75$ one way and the airlines are usually very accomodating when it comes to seat assignments if you tell them b4hand.
Happy travels! Pasha wishes you & Lucas bon voyage too.
