A lot of progressive work being done in the burlington area, which is certainly driving up the housing costs, and the popularity. I second the VT Pub and brewery, great sweet potato fries, but don't compare to the character and vibe you get having gravy fries at nectars (vermonter's like french fries) Als french fries can't be left off that list either.

People are incredibly friendly, and you'll find a cool mix of folks. There's a bit of the crunchy granola type which is pretty much the stereotype for the area, but that goes without saying....even though I just did.....anyway.
It will be hard to resist Burlington after hanging out on Church street this time of year. It may be cold, but with the trees and stores all lit up, and the bars going with live music pretty much every night, its just a great place.
Check out the neighboring towns, as Winoski is about to boom, and its just over the hill from Burlington. Shelburne is a beautiful town (where I'm from, so I might be biased). But you could possibly find some affordable housing in the essex, colchester area.

Good luck with the trip, I think you'll find there is a lot going on that no outsider would expect.

a word of advise, stay away from lower rt. 7, its a complete disaster right now!
