I'm a techy guy myself and Loooove gadgets. I like as many functions on my watch as possible and be it virtually indestructible and hate replacing batteries, especially since I have a few watches and don't like to find them 'dead' when I want to wear them. Having said that, I gravitated towards solar or kinetic drive. Then I went for function. (I'm not much into style.) I ended up with two favorites... One for casual wearing and one for a little formal occations, like work.

For casual, everyday, I ended up with Casio G-Shock solar watch black plastic. Water proof down to 200m. world time zone, timer, 30 data bank, stop watch, 5 alarms. pretty much 'loaded'. It has a 'sleep mode' and will preserve battery life for mor than 6 months (I actually tried this and battery was only down to 75%. I got it on Ebay new for $60.

Next, for more formal occation, I chose Citizen Skyhawk Titanium. (I might have liked the blue angel model better). Great looking watch. Light, yet has just about every function imaginable and more. 5 year warranty. I got it off of ebay used for $80. Only complaint I have is the band design is not comfortable. (Also, I take this watch off when I work on my car. It will scratch the paint on the car and I also don't want to damage it bumping into metal.)

Anyways, good luck. I looked into Seiko Kinetics, but they're more expensive and not as many 'functions'.
