As for the music, I am currently using a mini RIO MP3 player. I haven't made the transition to iPod or no iPod. It's on the Christmas list, but more as a top "dream" gift. As a result, I have been trying to answer the question HP vs. Apple, and I currently have my music ripped via Windows Media Player (I like it) as WMA lossless. We can debate on that later.
I would like to go for the 40GB if I were buying it for myself. Reasons - additional space which equals more songs OR as many songs at a higher "quality" level; all the pieces included (cradle, etc.) seperately, which you would eventually want to buy, will add up to the additional $100 price difference or more, plus you get twice as much storage; I could possible archive my entire collection on it - I have the RIO for workouts/abuse-type activities where the iPod would be for at work, car, and general use. Saab related - they sort of have you because I needed a wrench for my Koni install. 1 wrench $10, a set of 7 $20. So, I did it, and bought the 7 for $20, and I eventually went back and bought the 9 for $30 because the 7 didn't have the 18mm I needed. Do you need the extra space, probably not, but I said the same thing years ago when I had my first PC built (after my switch from Mac) with its 4GB drive. I said, "more space than I will ever need." Now, I wouldn't be able to get the OS and 1 NHL 200X installed on there, much less all the music and movies I have, or other games.
Good idea about having a second drive AND then a backup. I bought an external HD for my laptop, and I was saving everything there, data-wise, along with a "backup" image of our PCs including the laptop. I figured this way I will have a backup if something goes wrong with the laptop drives. In addition, because the data is there and not on the computer itself, I will be "safer" in terms of filling up and slowing down performance. Boy was I wrong! Well, long story short, the external drive failed on me. So to echo, it truly stinks having to rip all your CD's a second time!! That and losing your data - pictures, music, etc.
I have around 150 CDs currently ripped to the replaced external hard drive. I have maybe 200-300 more, but this is more of my "collection," not ones I actively listen to. As WMA lossless, I believe the size is somewhere in the neighborhood of 40GB at this point. I would of course convert that down to store everything if I switched to the iPod. But for now, its saved NOT as MP3, and the RIO does use the WMA, which is why I decided on using that format. Also, it is lossless, and I was actually surprised to play back some of the CDs that had "audible" scratches and such, but still sound original on the ripped version.
Regardless of my experience, it is good to keep data separate from programs, etc. I did not know about "ghosting" the iPod, so thanks for the great bit of info. Good luck, and if you are looking to add Aux-in to your NG900, pop over to my site. Enough babble... Thanks.
