Two main components for me. Firstly cars are art and the Japanese do not appeal to Western tastes. European culture has a rich history of art. The best looking Japanese cars for me are invariably styled in Italy. A Datsun 510 is an old example of a this.
And environment in that the Japanese are smaller and live in a much more confined environment with no practical place to stretch the legs, so to speak, of their cars. Vehicles designed to operate at their maximum speeds have a different feel than cars produced where there are strict, relatively slow, maximums as in Japan.
I beleive the 9-2X is a good example of European tastes for firmer springs and softer shocks to handle higher speeds.
And being of European decent, Irish-Polish, and fairly good sized, I fit better in a European car.
What does this say about a Japanese car that's styled in SoCal and built in the Midwest? Just that it's hard to hide it's roots.
