...just to name a few Japanese cars with a lot of personality. Regarding US domestic makes, you could point to Corvette, Mustang, Hummer, a number of Chrysler designs as having "soul" as well.
When it comes to European cars, let's not forget that the majority (or at least a very large percentage) of cars sold in Europe are compact, diesel powered Opels, Renaults, Ford Mondeos, Rovers, Citroens, SEATs, and Fiats. The luxury and sport models generally sold here in the US aren't necessarily representative of what most Europeans drive.
I think Japanese and American car designers have come a very long way from eras such as the 1980's, when it was difficult to tell Camrys from Accords or Stanzas or 626s, or when all those Oldsmobuicks seemed to look and feel the same.
Having said that, I'm a loyal Saab owner and definitely enjoy the practicality, design, and high speed stability of European cars. But other makes have really come a long way...
