I currently have both a '01 Jetta 1.8T, and a range of 9000's. I've had Jettas, GTIs, and even an old Sirocco.
I like both, but for different reasons. The Jetta is a really fun car with the 1.8T. She likes to dance, as my wife says. Peppy (I hate that word, but it's accurate), good mileage, and nice handling. It's been pretty good to me for 60K miles. Downside? Feels small inside. Trunk is decent, but access is tough for larger objects. Seats don't fold down flat. But then again, it's a small sedan. It does a great job of what it's supposed to do.
A Passat is a grown up version. Not a good a dance partner as the Jetta. More space. Again, a decent sedan.
9000 - OK, I know we're talking out-of-production. A Hatchback of enormous proportions. Can swallow anything and keep going. Fantastic access. Huge back seat. With the 2.3l full turbo, really fast. Very comfortable driver, more comfortable than the VW.
9-5 - In Wagon form, very useful. I like the wagon more than the sedan, because to me, Saabs are functional, and the wagon has the most functionality of any Saab out there today (new). Doesn't feel like a wagon when you drive it. The sedan is no slouch, either.
I find Saabs to have better quality materials, a little quieter, and just a bit nicer cars. I also feel much safer in a Saab. Then again, Saabs cost more than VWs, (in general), so you do get what you pay for.
We were looking for a hauler to replace an old '88 9000 this summer. We looked at the 9-5 wagon - great car. The VW counterpart was a Passat wagon. The Passat wagon felt like, well, a wagon. Nice car, a bit noisy, and I hate those window-shade cargo covers. A Passat sedan would have been a decent compromise, but not quite the space and functionality. The Saab wagon felt that much more comfortable, faster, and much better use of space. And it didn't feel like a wagon when we drove it. But it hauls like a wagon when I want to haul.
What did we buy? We bought a '97 9000, because we really love the 9000 (actually bigger inside than a 9-5 wagon!). In a few years, there won't be any decent 9000s around. I can go to a Saab dealer and see 9-5 wagons on the lot that will be nice used cars in 3-4 years. VW are always out there.
I like the way VWs handle and go. Nice quality materials - not quite as nice as Saab, but then again, cheaper. Saabs win for me based on safety record and functionality. If I were looking for a run-around car, a Jetta is a better deal than a 9-3.
