DV camcorder from Asia won't display on US TV

When in Thailand recently, I bought a new Panasonic DV camcorder (one of those palm-sized video cameras with the small digital tapes). I tried to output it using A/V jacks to our TV here in the US, the video didn't look right. It was black and white, with the picture scrolling up vertically. Not being the A/V techie sort (our main TV is 11 years old), I'm concerned I inadvertently bought something incompatible. Any thoughts on a diagnosis and possible remedy?
