Had a friend move to Ireland earlier this spring and had trouble getting a job. After ~3 months he finally found a job that brought him back to the US...
He's an athletic trainer, working with athletes evaluating injuries. If you've every watched a sporting event, he's the dude that runs out onto the field when someone gets hurt. Last job he had in the US was at a doctor’s office doing preliminary evaluations on patients coming in with injuries (checking for broken bones, torn ligaments, etc.). The problem that he had in Ireland is that they didn't have anyone who that performed that type of work. He eventually got to know someone who was familiar with his profession and was willing to hire someone to perform the work.
As in the US, it's not necessary what you know, but whom you know.
