Obviously we are witnessing tragic, senseless and random loss of life, on the scale of genocide or nuclear strike. I wanted to tell our small story.
My little sister arrived in Ton Sai, Thailand with her friend, another American girl in her 20's, on December 25th.
A christmas email related that she would be staying on the beach, she said she would squeeze the sand between her toes for us if we would squeeze a snowball for her.
On the morning of December 26th we heard the news, 1000 dead in Sri Lanka. Many other countries affected. Sent email of a forced casual nature "Are you OK?'
By that evening 14000 dead. The next day, 30, 40, 50, 60,000. Thailand declares 1300 missing, 400+ tourists. No word from the girls, only calls to the embassy, emails sent to all hotels in the area, hospitals and local officials called but nobody ever picks up.
The numbers haven't stopped growing yet and every morning I wake up to see more horror. My wife has been checking the email every hour or so through the night, unable to sleep. I'm aware of every move because I haven't slept in days either. Everyone is agonizing and imagining the best and worst alternately. I'm getting ready to go to Bangkok, my father is already on his way. What we will do there, I have no idea.
And then, this morning at 5am, we get that email I've imagined 10,000 times. "Alive and Well".
My story ends happily, so many others don't. For anyone out there still looking: I know what you're feeling, don't give up hope.-AMG
