I had a fantastic time in Costa Rica last summer. I friend and I went down and rented a SUV to explore the country in. Incidentally, the SUV was a Daihatsi Terios with a 5-speed and all wheel drive. A very fun and satisfying car given the road conditions, and it makes any retelling of stories involving the car much more amusing .
We only had a week and spent much of it on the Nicoya Peninsula. We also went to Arenal and Monteverde. The hot springs at Arenal might be pleasant for you and the misses, and there are nice hiking in the area too. Monteverde is a great rainforest experience, and you may enjoy the zip line tours, which I understand are quite exciting.
The Nicoya area is great. Montezuma is a really fun little hippy town with a decent beach and good hiking. I recommend staying at the Amor del Mar. It’s just the right mix of comfort and the rustic. Malpais and the adjacent town (forget the name) are great spots to try surfing. There was some riptide, but nothing scary. The water is shallow and the waves are a friendly, but still interesting, height. I’m a novice surfer, and still had a great time combined with a little lounging on the beach. This area is much, much less developed than Jaco and far more pleasant in my opinion. All this is assuming you want to stay away from the resort type facilities, which I can assure you I have no experience with!
I hear the Oso Peninsula is a real rugged, off the beaten path gem, but probably takes a good bit of time to explore. I didn’t make it to the Caribbean side. Indeed, I was surprised by how little of the country I could see in a week. The road really are round and slow, but good fun.
I would strongly suggest buying the Lonely Planet guide book (I believe that was it…it had a green frog on the cover). I found it very insightful and well written.
