I got a ~$300 Pioneer player 4 years ago as a wedding gift. It eventually stoped playing CDs but plays DVDs like a champ and is still going strong at my mother-in-law's.
I replaced the Pioneer (I need the CD function) with a $90 Toshiba that broke in a year and was replaced under warranty with no trouble. The replacement works but vibrates terribly when a disk spins.
I'd really just skip the ultra-low end and get something decent. Try a somewhat higher end brand like Denon or Onkyo, which is what I'll do if the Toshiba goes belly up.
