They have kept acquiring companies and technologies until it's hard to say what they do. Sure, they do IT, and computers and servers, and a huge range of printers. They do many things quite well, but I get the sense that no one really understands what business the company wants to be when it grows up. And they are decidedly peculiar to work with. I deal with them as an industry analyst on the printer side. It is not clear whether there is a solid strategy beyond making money off consumables (ink and paper). I've been through some of their labs, talked at length with senior execs. I like their products and they have generally happy customers on the printing side, but I question how long they can stake their future to selling ink. It is after all, largely a commodity.
Carly leaving is no biggie. Someone else will come in and some things will change, but big companies usually just go on and on. When I compare Carly, though, to Anne Mulcahy who runs Xerox, there is just no comparison. Mulcahy is a master of building a team and a concensus and moving ahead. That company is being re-invented and a lot of credit goes to Mulcahy.
But if the board at HP isn't please with profits, I wonder what parts of the company are likely to go on the block?
Just my .02.
Noel
