You don't understand! I have AWD! Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 11 Feb 2005 08:29:23 In Reply to: TRY SLOWING DOWN!, Doug/NH, Fri, 11 Feb 2005 08:10:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
According to all the advertising, AWD and Massive, Road Hugging Weight are all it takes. That and the rear DVD player. Everybody knows that SUVs are impervious to the weather.
If you notice in all the ads, the SUV is shown bounding through snowy fields. Never the road, just snowy fields. Obviously the folks on the highway have it wrong. And you were seeing the SUV's in their native habitat - medians, ditches, and trees - Offroad!
That is my complaint about AWD/4WD. It eliminates a critical driving test. In the old days, it took a level of skill to get a car moving. So to get going, you had to demonstrate some car capability. This implied that you might, just might, be able to control the beast once underway. Nowdays with TCS and AWD, any buffoon can get the car going with no more skill than pressing a pedal. They don't have to demonstrate any car control capability. And ABS is great, but cars in the past 3/4 century have all had 4 wheel braking. So folks that used to be safely stuck because they couldn't get the car going in slippery conditions can now get 2 1/2 tons of sheetmetal and entertainment system up to 60 MPH+ with no trouble. Steering and braking are still mysteries, though.
