Doom 3 is cool for about a day but very repetitive and very dark environment. I'm sure some good companies will take id's engine and make some great games from it.
Half Life 2 on the other hand is awesome. Great storyline, great atmosphere (think 1984) and a variety of situations to work your way through.
Splinter Cell (a Tom Clancy game) is great, and I've heard the followup is even better.
I still play Quake3 CTF sometimes as to me it set the standard for online internet gaming.
