Take this with a grain of salt if you wish... I own some Altec lansing based horns (eXemplar) that I run with a 300B amp. They're on loan to a friend. I currently run a 3 way DIY active setup that ranges 99dB eff and uses a PHL 15" woofer, Audax mid, and Aurum Cantus ribbon for highs. 2 300B amps and a Pass Aleph 3 (20W) for bass. Bottom line, I'm a high eff guy. That aside, I'll focus on my "panel speaker" phase of my audiophile journey, back when I had more powerful amps...
I liked the sound of maggies. Never heard quads. I hate M-L's. I owned Acoustats. What the 'stats did in the mids, highs, and imaging was pretty amazing IF you sat in the sweet spot (which was VERY specific) and if the music wasn't all that dynamic. So, that limited my ability to move around the house/room and listen. It also ruled out a large portion of my music collection.
My current setup is so I can listen in the living room, dining room, or kitchen of my condo. I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't do the kind of listening that demands I sit in the chair with my head in one very specific position. I have a 2 friends with dedicated listening rooms in their basements. It's a concious act to go and listen to music for those guys. I want music in my everyday life, so it's in the living room. Thankfully my wife also loves music, too. There's food for thought with panels.
