Some herbs will last forever and spread perhaps. Thyme can be like that.
Mint can be a horrible weed. Plant in a container and put the container in the soil. But be careful, mint roots will break plastic or clay pots.
Rosemary will not winter, keep in clay pot and take into the house for the winter.
Tomatoes like an acidic soil, and potatoes and tomatoes do not like what each other does to the soil. Tomatoes need lots of sun. Too much water or rain after fruit is formed will make fruit split before ripe. You need to remove some of the growth and leaves to get whats there to ripen up. If the tomatoes cannot get a lot of sun, this may not work for you. Sometimes when tomatoes are ripening in September, frost comes first. A southern wall may create a micro climate that will improve growth and setting of fruit. Fruit will not set until temps stay about a certain temp for a week or so, can't remember those details.
Chives are nice to have, but remove the seed heads or they can be spread like a weed.
Basil is great. Often find self starters from last years seeds. There are several kinds that have different colors that add some interest. Basel can spread, so do not plant things of low stature near, like 'hens and chickens'.
Ripe tomatoes sliced with chopped basil, chives and thyme, with olive oil, salt, pepper and balsomic vinegar is wonderful.
Do not try to grow things near a black walnut tree.
