OT: Laptop computer batteries

My wife recently got a new Thinkpad G41 to replace her six-year-old TP 600E. One problem her old one had was going through batteries about every two years (she uses it 98% of the time connected to mains power). She just had the motherboard and battery replaced under warranty for a charging problem, and is starting over with a brand-new battery, so I wanted to ask what people think about:
1) Whether to take battery out if the laptop is almost always plugged in?
2) If so, what is the best wasy to keep it fresh while uninstalled?
2) If it is better to leave the batter installed all the time, what steps should she take to ensure battery health?
Thanks,
