I drain a laptop down from time to time. I do a shutdown then power up and get into the setup mode. Leave in setup mode to drain the power. Then the OS does not need to be troubled by a low power event. When it dies in setup mode, you can then, when you get back to it, start again, still with no power and run in setup mode again. That gets some of the battery recovery discharged.
