This article is indeed interesting. Rather than looking out to some unforseen future date it asserts that oil will be $100 a barrel NEXT YEAR!
Hardly seems the best time for Saab to come out with a vehicle (9-7X) which averages 17 mpg (based on the AWD Chevy Trailblazer's stats at fueleconomy.gov).
As I've mentioned in previous posts, I think that Saab should really at least dust-off and start further development of the SVC and SCC technologies. Both of these would offer vast savings to their customers due to fuel economy.
If one goes to fueleconomy.gov (an U.S. EPA website) you can compare cars against each other and it even will tell you what fuel will cost you each year assuming:
45% highway driving
55% city driving
15,000 annual miles
$2.06/gal regular
$2.24/gal premium
The 2005 Chevy Trailblazer AWD running regular unleaded gasoline for one year with this above criteria would cost its owner $1,817 in fuel. Imagine if that gas price went up to $3 per gallon.
To contrast this, the owner of a 2005 Saab 9-5 SportWagon running Premium gasoline would spend $1,529 a year. That's a difference of $288 a year, and it's not comparing apples to apples as if you ran Regular in the Wagon it'd be even MORE of a savings.
I really think that if Saab wants to distinguish itself again as a world-leader they really should invest more in fuel economy and marketing it. As people get fed up with $3 gasoline and start trading-in their truck-based SUVs for passenger cars they'll start looking at fuel economy in the coming years.
