that way. They see it as an extra $15 a week. Unless cash is tight, or they just don't have much anyway, it tends to be under the radar. However, People are noticing it now because the price is not going back down and seems headed up--indefinitely. That is getting people nervous. But I don't think we'll see major changes in driving habits until gas costs much more ($3.50 to $4). An aricle I saw the other day reported that at least for vacation and work, people are not making changes.
The other problem is there is no alternative transportation infrastructure in most of the US, so people have to drive. When I lived near Boston I took the train most days. Now I live in a semi-rural area and I have to drive to get anywhere. Once you get out of major cities in the US cars are the only option. So demand will tend to remain fairly high, even if all the SUVs self-destructed tomorrow. Not a simple problem.
