People aroud me are pretty much sick by now of hearing me complain not only about how mediocre the NHL has become but moreover, how much more fun and interesting 'junior' leagues are.
I think that hockey has become a hostage by the very people who cover it, i.e. the journalists. The perks of following a team are many as one really gets to 'follow' and with that the feeling that the journalists are themselves important. With time, they become extremely cosy with the players and lack the criticism and the werewithal to qualify the Emperor... (Don't know why this isn't so in other sports though...)
I live in Mtl and all thru winter, sports radio kept talking about pro hockey, every f...ng day!!! And there isn't even hockey to cover.
I for one attended the PeeWee tournament in Quebec City, the largest PeeWee event in the world, with teams from Russia, Czech Rep., LA, and the likes. It was by far the most fun I have had attending a hockey event in a very long time. What's sad is that our journalists did not take this opportunity to cover thatevent. Hockey has losts it roots.
However, anyone around here will tell you that there has a been a revival in "garage' type leagues this winter and that the real fun of hockey is playing it.
What did it for me, pro hockey wise, was hearing Stephane Richer, during the prior strike, say that the players didn't have a choice because the pound of butter was going up for them too... Idiot!!!
To finish, no French media in Mtl covered the following:
- PeeWee hockey in Quebec City;
- The Pond Hockey Championships

- Or this amazing story of A PeeWee rematch, played on a pond with the Stanley Cup as decor

I for one, at 38, rediscovered pick-up hockey this winter, It was my best in a long time...
