As a long time VW guy going back to air cooled cars and buses, and having sold new and used VWs, I've generally found my Saabs are significantly cheaper to own and maintain. VWs tend to be inconsistant--you see one with 200K and no troubles and another of the same year and model that was the car from hell. My last VW (that I owned privately) was a '91 Corrado that I bought new, it was a very nice car that I considered my compensation for all the air cooled cars I'd owned. Fortunately I got rid of it at 40K before it started having supercharger issues. Modern VWs are nice enough cars but if I'm spending my money, Saabs (old or new) are the way to go.
