I agree with TML - get a note from the dealer as to what they say is wrong, along with an estimate to fix it.

When you go back to the tire shop, ask to speak directly to the manager. Don't deal with a salesman. Be calm and courteous, and take the attitude of 'these things happen.' Don't scream, yell, or otherwise imply incompetence on their part, no matter how deserving. The intial response to that is to resist, and you don't want resistance.

Do you want to let them know they're a bunch of idiots? Sure. Hold off - it won't help your cause.

If you get nowhere with the manager, ask if they are a member of the Chamber of Commerce or BBB. Most of those organizations have ways to settle disputes. Again, stay professional about the whole thing. Don't give them a reason to call you a hot head and dismiss you. They still might, but don't give them a good reason.

If none of that works, simply let the manager know that you will be contacting the local chamber of commerce, and that he will probably be hearing from your lawyer. Don't make it a threat - make it sound more like you are sad that it has come to this.

At that point, you've done all you can, and haven't escalated the problem by yelling, screaming, or otherwise tossing stuff about. Yes, that takes a lot of the fun out, but it's the best approach. Now, about all you can do is contact the chamber of commerce, and inquire with a lawyer as to what your options are.

My experience is that a reputable shop will find a way to make good, if you don't come charging in with your hair on fire. A disreputable shop, well, they aren't disreputable for no reason.

I recently had some new tires put onto my VW at a local tire chain. This was about 2 weeks before I was going to swap on my snows. When I went to put the snows on, I found one lugbolt had been stripped, and the others all over-torqued. I went to the shop with receipt in hand, and talked to the salesman. All I got was a bushel of dumb looks. They had no replacement lugbolts.

So I went to the VW dealer and picked up new lugbolts. The stripped one had left threads in the hub. I went back to the tire shop and asked to see the manager. He was incredibly apologetic, and promised to replace the stripped lugbolt, but he'd have to order it. I held up the bag of new lugbolts, and he immediately offered to refund me what I paid. He also had one of his mechanics run a thread-chaser through the hub (which is all it took), and allowed me to watch. I made sure the threads were clean, and that the new bolts would go in by hand. I also watched them torque it properly. The manager was courteous and quick to address the issue. Now, mine was quite a bit cheaper than yours, but it may very well work.

Good luck
