I have done this so many times in the past year, that I have started a little side business.
Here is what has been successful in blocking out all unwanted, worms, viruses, trojans, data miners, etc. All the programs have free versions and
Firewall: On all time in bkgd: I use ZoneAlarm, it has settings that hide your computers identity, and prevents stuff from coming in.
Ad-Aware from Lavasoft: 10-15 minutes to run: Great for getting data miners and other ad oreinted spam bugs. Most of these are harmless but in large numbers they can slow down your computer.
Hijack This: 1 minute to run: Great for catching nasty and resilient trojans that will take control of your browser and other programs.
Spybot: 5-10 minutes to run: Cathes all sorts of worms and trojans that are not as bad
CCleaner: 5 seconds to run: This is a great little program that delete, temp files, cookies, history and about 10 other folders all at the same time. I use this every day to doa clean swwep of any files that may have made it in during the day.
I would be happy to go into detail further if you interested send me an email.
