For some in-depth testing on which camera suits your needs best.
For me the XT has both the D70 and D70s beat. It has image quality on par with the much more expensive 20D. It has a better 8 MP CMOS sensor developed in-house compared to a 6 MP Sony CCD sensor in the Nikons. The extra 2 MP does make a big difference if you like to get close to your subjects, because you can crop the pictures more for that extra zoom with no loss in visible quality. It has less ISO noise than both Nikons(acceptable results at 1600 ISO!). As for burst shooting, the D50 is much slower than the other cameras. The XT / 350D is faster than the D70 and the D70s looks to be a bit faster again (although the 144 frames are with medium size JPGs and who wants to shoot in anything but the best quality). Also 3 FPS for ~25 shots should be plenty for all but the most extreme sports photographers.
The D50 is severely handicapped IMO. No backlit function LCD, so unreadeable in the dark. It only takes SD cards, has a lowest iso of 200 and fastest shutter of 1/4000 sec. No depth of field button either. Both Nikons have their LCDs on the top of the camera, so you have to take down the camera from your face to view and change settings. These are some things that bothers me, but maybe wouldn't bother others.
Both the D70 and XT are fine cameras and which to pick is mostly down to personal preference and which lenses you happen to have lying around.
Enjoy whichever camera you choose :)
