I came with a friend to Carmax when she sold her car to them (I was offering her a ride home). The process was amazingly easy and low-stress. My friend just wanted to get rid of her car, so she didn't attempt to negotiate and I don't know how willing they would have been to do that anyway.
In the end she got a few hundred dollars above the KBB trade-in value of the car, and the entire process took about 25 minutes. There were no hidden fees and they weren't especially picky about the car (deducting for tire condition, etc).
So, in the end, it really is up to you: you know you'll probably get the trade-in value of the car, and that it will be a quick and easy process. You know you probably will be able to fetch a significantly larger amount if selling your car privately. However, the time you spend marketing and selling your used car might be better spent elsewhere. So it's really just a question of how much your time really is worth to you.
As for me, my friend's positive experience selling her car there convinced me I will at least need to seriously consider it. You should go to Carmax and just see what they can offer you for the car. Their offer is good for a few days so you can really think it over.
