Whether the alternator is bad or not, the sad part is that auto part stores will wheel out a tester and check your battery and alternator, while in the car and under load for no charge, and sell the same part for half the dealer price. It is not rocket science, takes someone who works at the counter 10 minutes.
Using Advance Auto Parts as an example, a remanufactured Bosch 90A alternator including the pulley is around $180, not including pulley $150.
The part numbers have been "consolidated", dealers only stock the 140A unit, so you are paying for a part that is 50% bigger than you need.
Most of the time, only the brushes and voltage regulator need to be replaced, the bearings seem to stand up ok. The regulator and brushes are around $75. A brush "kit" used to cost less than $10, not sure if one is available for the Bosch 90A unit, I have not seen one.
