I have a 12" 1ghz Powerbook and have been extremely satisfied with it. I honestly opted for it over the iBook because of its slicker appearance and build. If you type a lot, the keyboard is probably the best I have ever used on a laptop, which makes a big difference to me. I also feel the iBook doesn’t look as “professional” in a business setting, but that’s really just a personal preference. At the time, the iBook wasn’t available with a DVD burner, which was another issue for me.
Since you’re mostly interested in fairly light home use, either computer should easily satisfy your needs. I would go by an Apple store and try them both extensively, then go with the one you enjoy most. To me the tactile feel of the Powerbook made the difference in cost worthwhile, but I can see others having the opposite opinion.
