I have the 12in powerbook 867Mhz. Most of my work is either scholastic (writing code, writing papers, analyzing data, editing images) or frivolous (reading saabnet). I use the machine every day for about 2-6 hours. It is reliable and pleasant to use, but I'm not sure it is worth the extra money for the extra ports and glossy silver finish. At the time ibooks came only with a G3 processor and I was forced to get a G4 powerbook.
Best advice is to look very closely at the system specification (bus speed, maximum ram, port availability) and then choose based on what you HAVE to have in the next 3 months. After 3 months you'll likely find an alternative solution to what you initially didn't guess you needed.
