Hello? did someone say Railroad???
SF.. ride the antique trolleys from fishermans wharf around the embarcadero. Don't forget the cable cars and cable car museum.. the museum is free. I would skip muir woods. it is 4 hours at least to Yosemite from SF. My wife works at yosemite. go in on 140 into the valley, then out 41, where you will be near the sugar pine RR,then down to 145, to Madera, back on 99 to 152 which will bring you back into Gilroy, then from there you can do big basin, or monterey. I would skip carmel, unless you are wanting to see Clint Eastwood. the "17 mile drive" is nice, but expensive.
the skunk RR is nice, go to Willits and ride it to Fort Bragg and back.
the California state railroad museum is an award winning museum, and worth at least 4 hours.. you can drop him off and then spend time in 'old sacramento'. try Fat City resturant in old sac.
the wine train is good. get reservations early.
If you plan on being in SF during the summer, beware of the fog. The hotter it is in the Sacramento valley, the foggier it is in SF. bring a windbreaker or sweater just in case.
I grew up on the SF peninsula, and did SF sightseeing tours in the 80's with Parlor Car tours.
I can anwer any more questions you might have if you would like to email me.
