Our family uses 2 litre HDPE plastic buckets for storing kitchen scraps. Conveniently, these are the containers our ice-cream comes in. If one pail is full or starts to smell I/we put the lid on it (the lids fit well). Generally we use 2 buckets at any one time, more if a dinner party etc generates extra scraps. The buckets are emptied on the compost heap every few days. If a bucket gets nasty due to long use, it gets a good wash and goes in the plastic recyling (or garbage completely unredeemable).
A good stainless steel bucket and lid would do the same, and look better I guess.
BTW, while on the topic, it really helps to have a 2nd or third outdoor bin: one for active compost, one for raked leaves (sawdust also should work), and one for an aging pile (optional). Whenever adding new scraps to the active pile, finish with a light covering of leaves. By doing this, our outdoor pile is completely odor-free and we have no vermin problems -- despite living in an area with plenty of racoons, deer, ravens. Its nearly miraculous as, in contrast, our nearest neighbour has a commercial plastic container which the racoons constantly break into and distribute liberally... The leaves also provide insulation, which keeps the pile temperature up where decomposition is fast and complete.
We have bi-weekly municipal composting where we live, but use this mostly for compostable paper. Our garden is very happy with the product of our own pile!
