The deadlift is also one of my all time favorite exercises, but I must disagree on the use of a weight belt. A belt is a crutch to allow one to move more weight than the lower back can handle. If you train your lower back and abs to be strong, you won't need to wear a belt.
Clenching the abs hard and keeping a strong arch in the back will protect your back, provided you're not lifting more weight than you can safely handle. Exercises like the seated good morning are good for strengthening the lower back. If the weight hurts, do less. The one exception to the belt rule would be if you're attempting all-out weights like you'll find in powerlifting. Those guys can use whatever they want ;-)
My advice to new lifters would be: get a good teacher, and keep track of your efforts and results. And get into Olympic weightlifting, since it's just so much fun.
