I agree, from what I've read you only really need a belt if you're attempting a 1RM lift or something close (in other words lifting your absolute maximum for one rep). Once you become familiar with your body, you can feel when you're pushing it too much and you can back off. For example, there is a burning feeling my lower back / spinal erectors get after a few good sets of squats. This is a different sensation than when I'm doing too much weight- my lower back will feel like its getting stretched like a rubber band. Thats when I adjust my workout and put lower weights on the bar.
