Yes, cars that get a five star rating are safer than ones that get less, but I am not convinced that a 5 star rating is the best we can do or all that maters in safety. I think manufacturers are designing cars to pass these crash tests when the car may not be truly safe, e.g., crummy brakes, poor stability, etc. Also, that is one crash test. What happens when you are going twice as fast and get hit by a semi or spin and have multiple impacts where the airbag becomes useless and structural integrity/energy absorption is all you got? While mpg may be less black and white, one can get into the same design for spec situation. People want 30 mpg, give them 30, but they can only put 5 pounds on the roofrack (reference to the under designed load carry capability of many smaller SUVs and some cars) and don’t even ask about towing.
