As some folks have said, it varies from person to person. Everybody's response to sedation is different, and every set of teeth are different.

In general, the IV sedation you'll get is going to be very light. However, from your standpoint, you'll just drift off to sleep, and wake up very groggy. It'll be like being rousted from a deep sleep. Your driver will have great fun with you being groggy. Do Not assume that you'll be able to drive for 24 hours. In fact, don't assume you'll be doing anything the day of the surgery other than watching Springer on TV.

Depending on how you respond to the sedation, you might be just fine the next day, or a little tired. Again, don't plan on doing any rock climbing or taking the SATs, but otherwise you should be fine.

As to pain, it depends on what the surgeon has to do. If the teeth are impacted - that is, they're already pressing up against bone - the surgeon will have to do more work, and the area is already pretty pissed off. If he can take the teeth out without cutting bone, there is less trauma to the area, and you'll feel less pain and recover quicker. If he has to cut bone to get the teeth out, that's more trauma, so recovery will be longer and less comfortable. (notice I didn't say painful? That's doctor-speak).

I've known folks that had their cheeks puff out like chipmunks for a week. When I had mine done, there was no swelling, and I was eating solid food that afternoon. It was a total non-event. And that was with 30 year old technology (it was done in the dark ages, back in the early 70's).

I'll bet that most of the folks that have had bad experiences were longer ago than recently. Procedures have only gotten better. But if it is a complicated surgery, involving removing bone, it will hurt. Your surgeon should have already taken x-rays, and knows if he has a bone shelf to contend with. He should know how complex or simple it will be, and should have told you.

Most likely, the biggest issue will be tiredness and groggyness after the sedation, and jaw soreness.
