So, three later, M-in-L gets a summons in a personal injury action? Her insurer immediately disclaims coverage because of no timely report, as specified in most policies. I suppose the likelihood of all of this depends on the no-fault status of whatever state this event occurred in, and, if so, what threshholds of injury are required. Some states do not even require people to carry liability insurance at all. Insurers are all smiles when it comes time to collect a premium or sell a policy. But, look out when it comes time to make a claim. If this is a first accident in several years, it is not too likely that the premium will rise or not very much. If there are a series of accidents and/or traffic tickets, then the premium may rise. If sued, a major cost covered by the policy is the cost of legal defense, whether any damages are ever paid out or not. Penny wise and pound foolish?
