This is definately a strange move. I remember the last of the Oldsmobile commercials saying "...backed by GM" presumably to reassure anyone who had heard about the mark's elimination. (At the same time, I don't remember Chrysler doing this when they phased out Plymouth.) It seems like it makes sense for GM to try to prop up their other loser brands (Pontiac, Buick) with their own name. Everyone already knows that Cadillac is a GM brand, but I don't think they need/want to be reminded. Hummer, I think they'd be neither helped nor hurt by stronger GM association. Saturn used to be good, back when they were semi-autonomous from GM, but now they're not so a new badge might well serve as a warning label for returning customers. But I'd be surprised if they did GM or Saturn much good.
And then there's Saab. The way I see it, GM wants from Saab a line of cars that are percieved on the level of VW/Audi and BMW, and can compete with some of their offerings. GM already has a well-established American luxury line (Cadillac) that's in many ways going after similar targets, albiet with more success. On the one hand, GM needs Saab to remain European in the eyes of car buyers. On the other hand, my own personal 'research' (judging the reactions of people when they find out I drive a Saab) tells me that almost anyone who isn't a Saab loyalist either knows nothing about Saab or thinks they're unreliable weird junk. (They usually change their minds if they ride in my 9k Aero, however.) Most people still don't know that GM is in control of Saab, however. What I'm getting at is that GM badging Saabs may actually help perceived quality (or at least brand stability) in the eyes of the average American (even if the loyalists know the opposite is true). At the same time, it will erode Saab's European luxury status (which GM needs) so this, too, could wind up being a wash.
All in all, this move is yet another sign that GM has no idea what it's doing. I'm not too concerned either way. In my eyes, Saab's already gone.
